He swallowed a glass of living bacteria on purpose, and it changed medicine forever. For decades, doctors blamed stomach ulcers on stress and spicy food, and the real cause hid in the one place no germ was supposed to live. In 1984, Australian physician Barry Marshall drank a culture of Helicobacter pylori to prove what he and pathologist Robin Warren had found, and in 2005 the two shared the Nobel Prize. The bacterium survived inside the stomach by neutralizing the acid around it. The first lab dishes failed thirty times until a forgotten Easter weekend changed everything. The experiment followed the same four steps Robert Koch laid out in the 1880s. The medical world did not applaud, just as it had once dismissed Ignaz Semmelweis in 1847. The cure turned out to be about two weeks of pills. By the end, you will understand how one glass of cloudy liquid ended a century of medical certainty. ━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━ SOURCES ━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━ THE SELF-INFECTION EXPERIMENT: Marshall, B.J., Armstrong, J.A., McGechie, D.B. and Glancy, R.J., 1985.
