With its almost vertical front, unusual proportions, and tiny footprint, it seemed strange at first glance. But behind that unconventional design was a brilliant solution to a problem many families faced: how to carry more people without buying a much larger car. In this episode of Chrome Kingdom, discover the story of the Fiat 600 Multipla, one of the most unusual and influential Italian classic cars ever built. A TINY CAR WITH ROOM FOR SIX Introduced in 1956, the Fiat 600 Multipla was developed by engineer and designer Dante Giacosa using the mechanical foundations of the Fiat 600. Instead of a conventional front bonnet, the driver sat farther forward, creating valuable room inside the compact body. The result was remarkable. Depending on the configuration, the Multipla could accommodate up to six people in three rows of seats, despite measuring only around 3.5 metres long. Folding seats also created a useful cargo area, making this small Italian car suitable for family journeys, business use, and everyday transport. WHY DID FIAT BUILD SOMETHING SO STRANGE? The Multipla was designed around practicality rather than conventional beauty. Its front-mounted cabin, rear engine, and clever seating arrangement made better use of limited space. What looked unusual from the outside made sense once you understood what Fiat was trying to achieve. The car also became a familiar sight on Italian streets as a taxi. Its spacious interior and compact exterior made it particularly useful in busy cities, where carrying passengers without taking up too much road space was a major advantage. THE IDEA THAT ARRIVED DECADES EARLY The Fiat 600 Multipla anticipated the modern people-carrier, or MPV, by putting passenger space and versatility ahead of traditional styling. Its concept was simple: one compact vehicle capable of serving several purposes. Produced in Italy from 1956 to 1967, the Multipla became a memorable symbol of post-war Italian mobility. It showed how creative engineering could overcome the limitations of a small car and influence the way future vehicles would be designed. Today, the Fiat 600 Multipla is celebrated by classic car enthusiasts for its distinctive appearance, clever packaging, and important place in automotive history. Was the Fiat 600 Multipla simply an ugly little car, or was its unusual shape the secret behind its success? Discover how Fiat turned a practical problem into one of the most original designs of the 1950s.
