HISTORY and LEGENDS of the ancient pilgrim road via FRANCIGENA 100km north of Rome

The Via Francigena is regarded as the ‘queen’ of Italian walking routes, a historic route linking Canterbury to Rome, based on the diary of Archbishop Sigeric from 990 AD. Compared to other famous pilgrimage routes, it stands out for being a ‘network of paths’ and for offering a more solitary and cultural experience than the Spanish model. In this video we're talking about Montefiascone, Acquapendente and Centeno, three stages of the Via Francigena about 100 km from Rome. Here, history intertwines with legend, such as the story of how the famous local wine, EST! EST!! EST!!!, got its name, why the Church of the Holy Sepulchre was built in Acquapendente – featuring a replica of the oldest Holy Sepulchre shrine in the Western world, which houses the relic, a piece of marble, believed to be stained with the blood of Christ – and why Galileo Galilei had to stop in Centeno.
