In November 1984, following the assassination of Indian Prime Minister Indira Gandhi, organized mobs unleashed horrific violence against the Sikh community across Delhi.
Amid this carnage, one police officer's account offers a significant insight into what happened outside Sis Ganj Gurdwara Sahib in Chandni Chowk, Old Delhi.
Maxwell Pereira, who was serving as Additional Deputy Commissioner of Police (Additional DCP) of Delhi's North District at the time, describes how he and a small number of police personnel confronted the rioting mobs and eventually succeeded in dispersing the attackers.
This audio documentary presents Pereira's account also highlights a disturbing contrast between his actions and those of police personnel in other parts of Delhi, where Sikhs were reportedly disarmed and left vulnerable to murderous mobs.
