On the morning of October twenty-eighth, nineteen sixty-three, a crowd gathered on Seventh Avenue in Manhattan and watched the wrecking crews go to work on the most beautiful public building in America. It had taken ten years to build. It took three years to tear down.
This is the story of the original Pennsylvania Station — the Roman temple of trains that a railroad built to announce that New York had arrived, and of the demolition that finally taught America to protect its past.
This is the story of Penn Station: the Hudson River in the way and the tunnels that defeated it, McKim, Mead and White's pink-granite palace of 1910, the eagles and the great waiting room, the fortune it cost to maintain, the wrecking ball of 1963, the landmark laws the loss created, and the pieces scattered from a Manhattan cathedral to a train hall that opened, at last, in 2021. We finish fifty years later, in the station that replaced it.
