What is it about Whitechapel that still draws people back?
For author Jamie Boyle, the answer goes far beyond the question of who Jack the Ripper was. It is in the streets of the East End, the lives of the people who lived there, and the traces of a community that has changed almost beyond recognition.
In this conversation, Jamie and I explore the Whitechapel of 1888 and the place it has become. We talk about poverty and resilience, boxing and Cockney culture, the stories handed down through generations, and what can still be found when you walk the area today. Jamie shares why he has returned to the East End so often and why he calls the Ripper case “the greatest whodunit with the last chapter ripped out.”
We also get into the mystery itself: the familiar image of a cloaked gentleman in the fog, the arguments around suspects such as Charles Lechmere, and the questions surrounding the letter and kidney sent to George Lusk. Why does the case inspire such certainty in some people when so much remains unknown? And how do we discuss it without allowing the legend of the killer to eclipse the women whose lives were taken?
Jamie is the author of *There’s Something About Whitechapel*. This is a conversation about the unsolved case, but also about memory, place and the real people behind a story that has become folklore.
