Built for a Different World: The Strange Human Relatives Called Paranthropus

More than two million years ago, several kinds of human relatives shared the changing landscapes of Africa, and among the strangest were the robust hominins known as Paranthropus. With enormous molars, thick enamel, wide cheekbones, and in some individuals a pronounced sagittal crest for powerful chewing muscles, they once seemed easy to explain as highly specialized plant eaters.
