Kinlochleven to Fort William 🏴󠁧󠁢󠁳󠁣󠁴󠁿 | West Highland Way: The Final Chapter

A beautiful and memorable final day on the West Highland Way, walking from Kinlochleven to Fort William in August 2026. After following the trail through the Highlands for the past several days, this final stage felt like both another day on the trail and the beginning of the end of the journey. The day begins with a steep climb out of Kinlochleven, winding through beautiful birch woodland before opening out onto the remote and spectacular landscape of Lairig Mor, the “Great Pass”. Surrounded by the Mamores Mountains, this is the wildest and most isolated section of the West Highland Way, following the route of an old military road through a landscape of open moorland, heather and rugged mountains. There are few places to stop along the way, little shelter, and for much of the route, no mobile signal; just the trail, the mountains, the wind and the occasional hiker making their way towards Fort William. Along the way are a few reminders of the people who have travelled this route before us, such as the iconic Tigh-na-Sleubhaich, a familiar landmark and resting place for walkers crossing Lairig Mor. With the heather in full bloom and the Mamores surrounding the trail, we had a beautiful final wilderness stretch before the landscape gradually changes as Fort William comes into view. The final miles bring the first real sense that the journey is coming to an end, with Ben Nevis appearing ahead and the trail eventually leading into Glen Nevis and Fort William. After several days and more than 150 kilometres on the West Highland Way, the journey finally ends at the Weary Walker statue, the official finish of the trail. 🥾🏔️ This is an atmospheric walking film with the natural sounds of the trail left in alongside instrumental folk music.
