A seance nobody was supposed to be holding, in a basement in a farmhouse built in 1736, and the hem of a white dress dragging past the window. Amanda Noel was in that basement. She was also the caretaker of the real Conjuring house, and she slept there alone, seven days at a time.
Amanda Kagiwada and Michael Ryan Assip bring their first guest onto The Fear Archive to answer the question people have been asking since 2013: is The Conjuring a true story? Amanda Noel, the creator behind Spooky New England and a former ER nurse, knows this house better than almost anyone alive. She has been in every room of it, and she has the history to go with it.
What the film gets wrong starts with the Warrens. There was no exorcism of Carolyn Perron. There was a seance, Carolyn was thrown across the room while her children watched, Roger Perron punched Ed Warren, and the Warrens were thrown out of the house and never allowed back. The grateful ending was invented.
What it gets most wrong is Bathsheba Sherman. The film makes her a witch who killed a baby and hanged herself. She was a farmwife who had four children, buried three of them, and died of a stroke in her seventies. She never lived on the property, was never tried, was never accused of witchcraft, and was buried in a Christian service by a reverend next to her family. The dead-baby story does not exist anywhere before the 1970s. People have vandalized her headstone so many times it had to be taken away.
