Queen Victoria was her godmother. Her father had been the last Maharaja of the Sikh Empire. So why did Princess Sophia Duleep Singh refuse to pay her taxes?
From Hampton Court to the suffrage movement, Sophia turned a protected royal life into a public challenge. A surviving 1911 warrant records six shillings owed and a diamond ring seized. What happened to that ring reveals how a private loss became a shared act of resistance.
This film follows her family, her visit to India, Black Friday, tax resistance, wartime service and the gradual expansion of voting rights. Contemporary photographs, a moving family diagram, geographical views and clearly labelled document extracts trace the choices she made.
