In the kitchen, Shivani—who is seven months pregnant—is cooking rotis on the traditional stove alongside her sisters-in-law. Neelam, 35 (distressed): It becomes incredibly difficult to cook while standing in front of the stove in this heat. Even breathing feels like a struggle. Shivani, 28 (troubled): Cooking in this kitchen feels like traveling on a meteor; the heat leaves us in a wretched state. Meenakshi, 31 (troubled): The kitchen gets hot because of the stove's fire, but our house itself is made of brick and covered with a tin roof. Whether the sun's rays actually enter the house or not, the heat from the sun feels far more intense inside than it does outside. Nikita, 24 (troubled): I keep thinking about Shivani Didi. I wonder how she will manage her delivery in this heat and how she endures it all. I feel terrible just dealing with it myself. Shivani, 28 (smiling): It is difficult for me too, but I have my four sisters here to look after me, after all. (Narration): Drenched in sweat, the five daughters-in-law finish making the rotis and serve them—along with salt and chili—to the entire family. Nikita begins feeding the children with her own hands. Everyone’s faces are glistening with sweat. Ananya, 6 (distressed): Mommy, Mommy, I feel so hot. I can't bear this heat anymore. Pinky, 7 (distressed): Yes, I feel really hot too. Sharda, 62 (irritated): This heat has wreaked such havoc; it feels like we’re all going to melt away like wax inside this house. Manish (33, angry): After toiling all day in the scorching sun, what do we get to eat? A dry roti, some chili and salt, maybe an onion—or sometimes, just the dry roti. Naitik (25, sad): And we can't even eat that dry roti and salt-chili in peace. Our faces get drenched in sweat while we eat. Ramlal (65, distressed): In this heat, everyone else has installed ACs, coolers, and multiple fans in their homes, yet we don't even have a single fan to combat the heat. If we had even a hand fan, we could at least eat our meals in comfort. Sharda (62, gentle): The longer we sit here listing our troubles with the food in front of us, the hotter we’ll feel. It’s better to just eat and then rest. (Narration): Wiping away sweat, the entire family eats their dry roti with salt and chili. A few days pass this way, and one day, under the blazing sun, the five daughters-in-law are returning from the forest carrying firewood. Nikita (24, sad): This sun has drained all my energy. It feels like there’s no life left in my body. Arpita Didi... Arpita (26, sad): I’m okay. I’m just wondering—isn't there some way to rig up a fan for our family? Papa-ji was right; if we had a fan, everyone could eat in comfort. Even if it’s just dry roti, we’d at least be able to swallow each bite peacefully. Shivani (28, sad): Why not? It’s certainly possible, but we need the right idea—a simple method to build a fan easily. (Narration): The five daughters-in-law begin brainstorming ways to build a makeshift fan when Arpita spots long palm fronds lying beneath a date palm tree. Arpita (26, smiling): Look at those long palm fronds over there. "These are soft, pliable leaves. If we weave them together, we can make a really good hand fan." Neelam (35) (smiling): "Yes, that’s a great idea, and there are plenty of fallen leaves under the date palm tree. We won't even have to go through the trouble of plucking them." (Narration): The five daughters-in-law go to the date palm tree, gather the leaves, and weave them onto thin sticks to create two improvised hand fans. Meenakshi (31) (smiling): "This DIY fan made from date palm leaves is giving a really good breeze. Now our husbands, children, in-laws, and sister-in-law will be able to eat their meals in comfort." (Narration): At lunchtime, the whole family sits down to eat, and the five daughters-in-law start fanning them with their homemade fans. Ramlal (65) (smiling): "Wow, daughter-in-law, where did you get this hand fan? It’s providing such a nice breeze." Arpita (26) (smiling): "Papa-ji, we made this fan ourselves using date palm leaves. It’s our own DIY hand
