Text -BOOK II-Psalms 42–72
For the director of music. A maskil of the Sons of Korah.
1 As the deer pants for streams of water, so my soul pants for you, my God.
2 My soul thirsts for God, for the living God. When can I go and meet with God?
3 My tears have been my food day and night, while people say to me all day long, “Where is your God?”
4 These things I remember as I pour out my soul: how I used to go to the house of God under the protection of the Mighty One with shouts of joy and praise among the festive throng.
5 Why, my soul, are you downcast? Why so disturbed within me? Put your hope in God, for I will yet praise him, my Savior and my God.
6 My soul is downcast within me; therefore, I will remember you from the land of the Jordan, the heights of Hermon—from Mount Mizar.
7 Deep calls to deep in the roar of your waterfalls; all your waves and breakers have swept over me.
8 By day the LORD directs his love, at night his song is with me— a prayer to the God of my life.
9 I say to God my Rock, “Why have you forgotten me? Why must I go about mourning, oppressed by the enemy?”
10 My bones suffer mortal agony as my foes taunt me, saying to me all day long, “Where is your God?”
11 Why, my soul, are you downcast? Why so disturbed within me? Put your hope in God, for I will yet praise him, my Savior and my God.
Who wrote the book of Psalms
Multiple authors wrote the Book of Psalms, with King David being the primary contributor. Other named writers include Asaph, the sons of Korah, Solomon, Moses, Heman, and Ethan, while nearly a third of the psalms are anonymous
Psalm 42 is attributed to the sons of Korah, a group of Levitical musicians who served in the temple.
There are 5 divisions of the Psalms.
Book 1 (Psalms 1-41)- Book 2 (42-72) – Book 3 (73-89)- Book 4 (90-106) – Book 5 (107-150)
SUMMARY
Psalm 42 is a song of intense spiritual desire and a potent lament. It conveys the author's fervent need for God's presence during a period of loneliness, profound melancholy, and inner turmoil. Rather than concealing his suffering, the author confronts his grief head-on and actively offers hope to his own despairing spirit.
Important Ideas and Visuals
-The Thirsty Deer: The first sentence draws a comparison between a deer gasping for running water in an arid country and the soul's yearning desire for God.
-Tears and Isolation: The author is separated from both home and God's house. Day and night, he sobs as his religion is ridiculed by those who question, "Where is your God?"
-Painful Memories: He recalls happy times when he led group worship, which adds to his present feelings of spiritual dryness and loneliness.
-Self-Confrontation: The author ceases merely hearing his anxieties. He challenges his own hopelessness by talking to himself and decides to put his faith in God nonetheless.
The Main Refrain
The psalm's recurrent query and exhortation to oneself (Psalm 42: 5 and 11) are its heartbeat:
"Why are you in conflict within me, O my soul, and why are you thrown down? Have faith in God, for I will once more give thanks to him, my God and my savior."
This refrain teaches that while feeling overwhelmed is common, faith entails actively reminding your heart of God's assistance and grace in the future.
According to Psalm 42's verses 3–4 and 6–10 show us the psalmists' humility and reliance on God. He remembers the times when he would congregate in the sanctuary with God's people, present offerings, and hear the Word of God's promises. However, the psalmist also admits that he is far away from that haven. He yearns to be able to go back one day. He talks about how God must sing to him at night and show him love throughout the day. The psalmist then acknowledges that he prays back to God, whom he refers to as the "God of my life," in response to God's benevolence toward him. Day and night, this man is humbly reliant on God. Additionally, when we cry and seek God to intervene on our behalf, we ought to keep this attitude of humble need before him.
