The Kii Mountains, characterized by steep, rugged terrain, are home to countless waterfalls and small, ancient villages scattered here and there. Takimoto Village, which I visited this time, is located deep in the mountains and is extremely difficult to access. Located even deeper in the mountains beyond that settlement, Houryu Falls is a magnificent waterfall—rivaling even the famous Nachi Falls—yet it sees very few visitors. However, the fact that access is difficult—that it is inconvenient—prompts us to reflect on the meaning of true richness. That is why this waterfall and river remain beautiful forever.
