In 79 AD, a Roman city of up to 20,000 people just vanished. Not destroyed and rebuilt over time, but literally sealed under volcanic ash mid-meal, mid-conversation, mid-life. The people of Pompeii had no idea they were living next to one of the most dangerous volcanoes in history. To them, Vesuvius was just a nice green mountain. This video covers what actually happened that day, from the first eruption to the pyroclastic flows that killed people so fast archaeologists later found them frozen in their final moments. We also get into the weird details that sound fake but aren't: ancient fast food stalls, graffiti that reads like modern trash talk, and a library of scrolls so fragile scientists are using AI to read them without even opening them. The crazy part is that the same disaster that ended Pompeii also preserved it better than almost any other ancient site. For 1,600 years nobody even knew it was there. Now it's basically the most detailed snapshot of daily Roman life we have. Let me know in the comments if you would have left early or stuck around thinking it would blow over.
