Marlin County, West Virginia. October, 1873.
Three men have taken the same twenty-mile stretch of ridge road in three years, and three men have not come back. A state surveyor. A peddler with fifteen years on that route. A Methodist circuit rider whose horse walked back into town alone on a Sunday morning, with the saddle turned backwards and a scrap of his own coat tied to the pommel.
The federal circuit sends one man. Deputy US Marshal Obadiah Vessey, forty-one years old, thirteen years on the badge, the kind of marshal they send for cases nobody wants to write down.
What he found in a small hemlock-ringed clearing at the end of that road, a two-story frame house with the lock on the outside and every curtain drawn tight against the sill, is a story that stayed in a locked drawer in the sheriff's office for seventy-eight years. Only the sheriff who filed it, the guide who waited at the mill, and a WPA historian in nineteen fifty-one ever read the pages Vessey wrote in a shaking hand.
This is that account.

⚠️ A NOTE ON CONTENT:This story is a work of atmospheric historical fiction, inspired by Appalachian folklore, sealed county records, and accounts shared by listeners of the channel. Marlin County, Redgap, Harrow Hollow, and every person named in this account are fictional. Any resemblance to real persons living or deceased, or to any real family or settlement, is coincidental. Intended for mature audiences who enjoy slow, atmospheric, psychological horror. No graphic content. No jump scares. Just the kind of dread that walks up behind you at three in the morning and stands there quietly, breathing.
