Yaesu FTX-1 Optima on ATAS-120A tuned on 40m showing different Digital Noise Reduction settings to mitigate static crashes and smooth out background noise. I'm parked in one of my "zero man-made noise" parks in Central Delaware with my 2019 Honda Insight (turned off to eliminate its noise). Reports from some other 40m operators said the band was bad today. I'm hearing plenty of stations up and down the coast and out to the midwest. I baseline all bands for D-LEVEL with AMP 2 showing light snow on a dummy load, then adjust preamp gain when tuned on each band using the AMP 2, AMP1, IPO and maybe ATTN to lower the atmospheric noise to a workable level. I never use the RF Gain because it's not a RF Gain control. It is a "low audio cutoff" control that is poor operation for cutting out weaker signals that might want to break in, so I never use that. Anyway, when it comes to squashing static crashes from storms I find a DNR value of 7 works otherwise, I might use values of 2 to 4 to take background noise down. Whatever setting you choose, no under water or basement reverb effects using this DNR. Best yet of any radio I have owned. Good job Yaesu!
