A Rear End Observation Car View of Conway Scenic Railroad's Valley Branch - Conway to North Conway

During my recent trip to New Hampshire, I took a ride on Conway Scenic Railroad’s Valley Train which operates between North Conway and Conway. I upgraded my seating to First Class so I could ride in their open air observation car, the Gertrude Emma. Built in 1898 for the Pullman Company, the car was originally named “Libertas” and was used on the PRR’s Pennsylvania Limited between New York and Chicago. When Pennsylvania Station was built, wooden cars like this were downgraded. It was renamed “Marysville” and ran on the Western Pacific’s “Feather River Route” between Salt Lake City and San Francisco. In 1922 it was purchased by the Bangor & Aroostook Railroad in Maine. It was acquired by Conway Scenic in 1975 and fully restored it in 1987 when it was renamed “Gertrude Emma” after the wife of the railroad’s first president. For an extra charge, if you speak to the narrator on board the train, you can ride the rear platform of the car on it’s return trip. (You could ride both ways, but with the locomotive horn right there, I would not recommend you do so!) Enjoy this latest addition to the channel!
