From Kyoto’s Ninenzaka and Yasaka Pagoda to the narrow lane of Pontocho, this collection brings together some of my favorite moments from Japan’s old streets. Explore the traditional teahouse districts of Higashi Chaya and Kazuemachi in Kanazawa. Cross Nakabashi Bridge into Takayama’s old town, then wander through the streets around Sakurayama Hachimangu Shrine. Walk through Hagi’s samurai district before returning to Kanazawa’s Nagamachi neighborhood. Rain on old streets, reflections on wet pavement, wooden houses and quiet shrine approaches — each place has its own atmosphere and its own sounds.
