Coast Guard K9s Search FDR’s Presidential Yacht | Inside Maritime Security Training A historic presidential yacht. Two Coast Guard K9 teams. A ship full of tight passages, hidden spaces, and challenging search environments. What does it take for a U.S. Coast Guard working dog to perform a vessel search after the team reaches its objective? In Oakland, California, Coast Guard K9 Chiefs Bongo and Pongo take part in simulated maritime security training aboard USS Potomac — the historic presidential yacht once used by President Franklin D. Roosevelt. From furnished cabins and narrow stairwells to exposed deck equipment and the wheelhouse, these working dogs and their handlers demonstrate the discipline required to search complex maritime environments. This documentary also examines a separate training event involving the U.S. Coast Guard Maritime Security Response Team East (MSRT East), featuring helicopter hoist procedures, specialized canine equipment, and maritime security training. *MILITARY EQUIPMENT & UNITS FEATURED* U.S. Coast Guard MH-60 Jayhawk helicopter — a medium-range rotary-wing platform equipped for hoist operations. USCGC Richard Snyder (WPC 1127) — a U.S. Coast Guard Sentinel-class Fast Response Cutter. USS Potomac — Franklin D. Roosevelt's former presidential yacht. Maritime Security Response Team East (MSRT East) — a specialized Coast Guard maritime security unit. Military Working Dogs (MWDs) and specialized K9 aviation equipment. *WHY THIS TRAINING MATTERS* Helicopter access is only one part of maritime operations. Once aboard a vessel, K9 teams must work around unfamiliar surfaces, confined passageways, machinery, changing elevations, and distracting environments. Explosives-detection working dogs support maritime security by helping trained handlers examine areas where dangerous materials may be concealed. The challenge is not simply reaching the ship. It is maintaining effective search performance once inside. *WATCH THE FULL DOCUMENTARY* 00:00 The Work After Arrival 00:32 Aboard the Potomac 01:05 The Detector Role: A Handler Explains 01:23 Furnished Cabins 02:02 Deck Machinery and Narrow Routes 02:38 The Delivery System 03:17 What MSRT East Does 03:42 Canine Aviation Kit 04:22 A Separate Hoist Exercise 05:02 Between the Bunks 05:42 At the Stairwell 06:26 Inside the Wheelhouse 07:08 The Visible Reward 07:21 Why Practice Continues 07:52 A Second Dog, the Same Ship 08:48 The Handler in the Picture 09:29 What the Equipment Delivers *DOCUMENTARY & SOURCE INFORMATION* This editorial documentary combines historical footage from two separate U.S. Coast Guard training events. The events are not presented as a single continuous operation. Locations include Oakland, California; Elizabeth City, North Carolina; and Portsmouth, Virginia. The Potomac training was associated with preparations for Super Bowl LX. Its DVIDS video metadata lists January 2026, while the source caption contains an inconsistent January 2025 date. All depicted exercises are training. No real explosives discovery, combat engagement, emergency rescue, or operational outcome is claimed. Original narration and educational commentary provide additional context. Some narration uses a synthetic voice; source interviews, recorded imagery, and original field sound are authentic. *OFFICIAL FOOTAGE CREDITS* U.S. Coast Guard Maritime Security Response Team East K-9 Unit Conducts Training Video: Petty Officer 3rd Class Christine Bills https://www.dvidshub.net/video/973337...
