Chuam Chotdaebawi Rock (추암 촛대바위) Chuam Chotdaebawi Rock, located at Chuam Beach in Donghae-si, is a popular tourist destination in South Korea, particularly famous for its dramatic coastal scenery and beautiful sunrises. The rock formation's name translates to "Candlestick Rock" because its shape resembles a candlestick. Legend and History A local legend tells of a man who lived in Chuam with his wife and a concubine. When their constant quarreling enraged a god, both women were struck by lightning. The man, consumed by loneliness, turned into the rock formation that stands there today. Historically, a Joseon Dynasty official named Han Myeong-hoe was so captivated by the area's rock formations that he named the surrounding region "Neungpadae," meaning "Walk of a Beauty". Tourist Attractions In addition to the main rock, the area offers several other points of interest: Haeamjeong Pavilion: This traditional pavilion was built in 1361 and renovated in 1790. It is located on a rocky cliff and offers scenic views of the coast. Chuam Suspension Bridge: This 72-meter-long pedestrian bridge, which opened in 2019, provides a perfect viewpoint for photographing the East Sea and the unique rock formations. Chuam Sculpture Park: Situated near the suspension bridge, this park features various sculptures and offers another scenic spot for visitors. Other Rock Formations: The area is part of a "Stone Forest" that includes other uniquely shaped rocks, such as "Brother Rocks".
