Why does France keep protesting and why do some demonstrations turn violent?
In this French listening practice for intermediate learners, I go beyond the images of riots, burning buildings and clashes with police to explain what is really happening in France and what these protests reveal about French society.
We’ll look at the high-school student movement, problems inside the French education system, smartphones and attention, AI and the future of work, France’s huge public spending, the difficulty of reforming the French social model, the growing politicisation of the protests, the Louvre blockade, rioters and looters, police violence, and the shocking fire at Limoges City Hall.
But this is also a French lesson.
Along the way, you’ll learn and understand real French words and expressions used in the news and everyday political discussion, including:
revendiquer
un manifestant
un casseur
un pilleur
les acquis sociaux
un legs
le maintien de l’ordre
My goal isn’t to tell you what to think.
It’s to help you understand the France behind the headlines in real French.
