Developed by Evolution Studios and published by Sony Computer Entertainment, the title is based entirely on the 2005 FIA World Rally Championship season. The game holds significant historical importance: it was the fifth and final official title in the franchise to be produced by Evolution Studios and distributed by Sony, marking the end of the brand's exclusivity on PlayStation consoles. The major difference that puts Rally Evolved years ahead of its time is its random events engine. Breaking with the pattern of other racing games of the time—where the driver only memorized the track layout—this title introduced dynamic variables in real time, simulating the real injustices and dangers of modern rally racing. During the stages, the player is forced to react immediately to unforeseen dangers, such as: Landslides and rockfalls from cliffs directly onto the track; Animals that suddenly invade the track; Burst pipes or overflowing rivers that instantly alter the ground's grip. Furthermore, the dynamism extends to competitors controlled by Artificial Intelligence (AI). Although the traditional rally format involves separate starts, the game simulates accidents in real time on the track.
