Always Ready to Give an Answer for Your Hope
Beginning in 1 Peter 3:13-18, this message looks at being ready to give an answer for the hope that is in us. The pastor looks at three times we are tempted to say "I don't know" or "mm-mm." First, we should know for certain that we are going to heaven. Scripture says we can know we have eternal life (1 John 5:12-13, John 20:31), because our hope rests in Jesus Christ and not in ourselves, our religion, or our works (Titus 3:5-7, 2 Timothy 1:12). It is a "know-so" hope, not a "think-so" hope. Second, if we know enough to be saved, we know enough to tell someone else how to be saved. The gospel is simple: God loved us and sent His Son to die for our sins, and whoever calls on the name of the Lord will be saved. Third, when we are in pain, we may not have the words or the answers, but the Holy Spirit intercedes for us (Romans 8:26). Jesus understands our infirmities (Hebrews 4:15-16), and His grace is sufficient (2 Corinthians 12:7-10). The pastor shares his own experience with cluster headaches and how God used it to teach him to trust Him and to comfort others (2 Corinthians 1:3-4). Finally, we should not say "mm-mm" to caring about people's souls. The message calls believers to see the needs around them, to weep for the lost, and to show love in deed, including inviting those with nowhere to go into our homes at Thanksgiving. It closes with Romans 15:13 and a prayer to be filled with overflowing hope in Jesus Christ, no matter what we are going through.
