Nazar Singh’s Research on the Origin of the Punjabi Language Challenged Indian Scholarship

Punjabi language researcher Sirdar Nazar Singh passed away a few days ago. His Antim Ardas was held at his native village on 2 January 2026. Scholars, linguists, and researchers from various fields gathered to pay homage to him. Addressing the gathering, Dr. Sikandar Singh, Head of the Punjabi Department at Sri Guru Granth Sahib World University, Fatehgarh Sahib (Punjab), spoke about the significance of Sirdar Nazar Singh’s research on the origin of the Punjabi language. He highlighted how a formally less-educated but sincere, independent, and organic scholar like S. Nazar Singh successfully challenged the misconceptions established by mainstream Indian scholars regarding the origins of Punjabi.
