In this fashion illustration tutorial, I show how to render an Ankara print by observation, without overcomplicating the process. One of the most important skills you can develop as an artist is learning how to truly see. Before picking up a marker, train your eyes to observe: -Where each colour is placed -The shapes and patterns within the fabric -How the print follows the body and the movement of the garment -Where the shadows naturally fall -Where the light hits and creates highlights -How small details can make a fashion illustration feel more realistic For this illustration, I use an actual Ankara fabric as my reference and break down what I see. You don't have to memorize every detail of the print. The goal is to observe, simplify, and translate what you see onto your fashion illustration. This is a skill you can apply beyond Ankara the more you train your eyes, the better you'll become at drawing clothing, fabrics, figures, textures, colours, proportions, and eventually your own fashion designs. If you're learning fashion illustration or trying to become a better artist, I'd love to know what you'd like me to teach next.
