Carroll Shelby didn’t want to build it. When Iacocca asked him to turn the Mustang into a sports car, his answer was “Lee, you can’t make a race horse out of a mule.”
He took the job anyway — and built something so uncompromising it won three straight national championships. A 1965 GT350R raced by Ken Miles sold for around $4 million in 2020. No Mustang has gone higher.
The part nobody covers: the SCCA rulebook designed this car, not Shelby. 100 had to be sold to the public just to go racing. B-Production was a two-seat class — that’s why the back seat came out, not weight saving. And you could modify the engine or the suspension, not both.
