In this video, I take you through “Chagall: A Cry for Freedom,” the remarkable exhibition presented at Fundación MAPFRE in Madrid, exploring the life and work of one of the most distinctive and poetic artists of the 20th century. Marc Chagall (1887–1985) created a visual language unlike anyone else. Floating lovers, animals, musicians, villages, flowers and dreamlike figures inhabit paintings where reality and imagination seem to exist at the same time. But behind Chagall’s extraordinary colors lies a much deeper story. His work was profoundly shaped by love, displacement, war, exile, spirituality and his lifelong search for freedom. Born in Vitebsk, in present-day Belarus, Chagall experienced some of the defining upheavals of the 20th century, yet continued to create images filled with extraordinary poetry and humanity. “Chagall: A Cry for Freedom” explored this relationship between art and freedom throughout his career, revealing how personal memories and major historical events became intertwined in his work. What fascinates me about Chagall is his absolute freedom as an artist. He never allowed reality to dictate what a painting should look like. People can fly. Scale becomes irrelevant. Colors become emotional rather than realistic. Memories coexist with dreams. And somehow, everything makes sense. His paintings remind us that art does not always need to explain itself logically. Sometimes emotion, memory and imagination are enough. As an artist, I find this freedom incredibly inspiring. Looking closely at Chagall’s paintings also reveals something that reproductions often lose: the richness of the surfaces, the gestures, the unexpected combinations of color and the extraordinary energy within apparently simple compositions. Whether you already love Marc Chagall or are discovering his work for the first time, I hope this exhibition gives you a new perspective on an artist who refused to separate life, memory, love and imagination from painting.
