What do Orthodox Christians believe that other churches don't? Seven things — and on almost every one, Catholics or some Protestants share part of the belief. This video shows you exactly where the real difference lies, fairly, with no polemic and no pitch to switch churches. I'm Nicholas. I'm not a priest and I don't speak for any church. I explain what each tradition teaches, in its own words, and I tell you plainly where they agree and where they don't. The 7 beliefs: 1. Theosis — "partakers of the divine nature" (2 Peter 1:4). Why Catholics already quote Athanasius on this, and what is still distinctively Orthodox: Gregory Palamas and the essence–energies distinction. 2. Ancestral sin — mortality and a wounded nature inherited from Adam, but not his guilt. Romans 5:12, the "in whom" vs "because" question, the Catholic Catechism (404–405), the Westminster Confession, and why most Orthodox do not accept the Immaculate Conception. 3. The Filioque — "and the Son." John 15:26, the Council of Toledo (589), Rome (c. 1014), the break of 1054, the lifting of the excommunications in 1965, and the 2025 prayer at Nicaea where the Creed was said without it. 4. Icons — the Seventh Ecumenical Council (Nicaea, 787): honor, not worship, because the honor given to an image passes to the one it represents. Where Catholics agree, and where Lutheran and Reformed churches differ. 5. The Eucharist — the epiclesis, infant communion, and why Orthodox Christians affirm the real presence but decline to define how it happens. Compared with transubstantiation (Catholic), the Small Catechism (Lutheran), Westminster (Reformed) and the Baptist Faith and Message. 6. No pope — a family of self-governing churches, the Ecumenical Patriarch as "first among equals," and the seven councils. Compared with Vatican I (1870) and with Scripture-alone Protestantism. 7. Fasting and the calendar — Wednesdays, Fridays and four fasting seasons; how this compares with Catholic Lenten rules; and why Orthodox Pascha falls on April 12 in 2026, May 2 in 2027, and together with Western Easter in 2028. Thinking about fasting yourself? Please talk with your doctor first, and if you belong to a church, with your own priest or pastor. If you want to understand a tradition more deeply, ask someone in that church's own community. Pastor Nicholas Andros is a composite educational character presented with the help of AI.
