Rylands Mill (also known as Gidlow or Pagefield Mill) is a Grade II listed building located in Wigan and is known for its distinctive Italianate style and red brick construction. The mill opened for business in 1865 and was designed by architect George Woodhouse for John Rylands & Sons of Manchester. This company ultimately became the largest textile manufacturing concern in the UK and this was one of 17 mills alongside many other factories owned by the company at it's peak.
In 1953 Great Universal Stores (GUS) bought John Rylands & Sons, and the mill changed it's name to Pagefield Mill. It carried on trading until in 1985 where it then became an annex to Wigan College until it's closure in 2007. Since then it has fallen into severe disrepair.
Many thanks to the very knowledgeable person I met when I was there filming; I learned quite a bit about the mills history and it was lovely to speak to someone with a keen interest in the mill.
