LET US EXCEL IN THE GRACE OF GIVING
Deuteronomy 6:4–5 & 2 Corinthians 8:7–12
One of the greatest expressions of love is the willingness to give. True love does not remain in words; it expresses itself through sacrifice, kindness and generosity. God has shown us the greatest example of giving by offering us life, love and salvation through Jesus Christ. As Christians, we are therefore called not only to receive God’s blessings but also to become channels of blessings to others. Today’s theme, reminds us that giving is not simply a duty to perform but a grace in which every believer must grow.
In Deuteronomy 6:4–5, Moses calls Israel to acknowledge the Lord as the one true God and to love Him with all their heart, soul and strength.
This command teaches us that our relationship with God must involve our whole being. Genuine love for God influences how we use our time, talents,
possessions and resources. When we truly love God, we recognise that everything we have comes from Him, and we become willing to use what He has entrusted to us for His glory and the good of others. Giving, therefore, begins with a heart that belongs completely to God.
In 2 Corinthians 8:7–12, Paul encourages the Corinthian Christians to excel in faith, speech, knowledge, earnestness and love, and also in the grace of giving. He presents generosity as an important evidence of Christian maturity. The apostle points to the example of Jesus Christ, who,
though He was rich, became poor for our sake so that through His poverty we might become rich. Christ’s self-giving love is the foundation and inspiration of Christian generosity.
Paul also makes it clear that giving should not be forced. God values a willing heart that gives according to what a person has, not according to what they do not have. The value of our giving is not measured only by the amount presented but also by the love, sincerity and willingness behind it.
To excel in giving, we must move beyond occasional generosity to a lifestyle of sharing. We can give through our offerings, support for the needy, care for the sick, assistance to struggling families and service to the church and community. Every act of generosity becomes an opportunity to demonstrate God’s love.
Beloved, excelling in the grace of giving begins with loving God wholeheartedly and following the sacrificial example of Jesus Christ. Let us give willingly, faithfully and according to what God has placed in our hands. May our generosity bring hope to the needy, strengthen the church
and glorify God. As we grow in the grace of giving, may our lives become living testimonies of God’s abundant love. Let us not only receive God’s blessings; let us become blessings to others.
