Imagine a girl who is two and a half meters tall, with bones as thin as a bird's and eyes larger than yours. She has never felt rain or seen a sunrise, and she is human: your great-great-great-grandchild, many times over. In this episode we follow what space would do to our bodies, our minds and our children, from the first minutes after launch to thousands of years among the stars. ⏱ CHAPTERS 0:00 The girl who never felt rain 0:27 What if we never came back? 0:43 Chapter 1: The first minutes 2:01 Chapter 2: Use it or lose it 2:57 Chapter 3: The invisible danger 3:18 The NASA Twins Study 3:55 Chapter 4: Children of the stars 5:35 Chapter 5: Evolution 7:21 Chapter 6: The mind 8:21 The girl, revisited 9:02 Would you go? 🔬 THE REAL SCIENCE BEHIND THIS EPISODE • Fluid shift: in microgravity about 2 liters of body fluid moves toward the chest and head, giving astronauts "puffy face, bird legs". • Spine growth: without gravity compressing the spinal discs, astronauts can temporarily grow up to about 5 cm (roughly 3% of their height). • Bone loss: astronauts lose about 1–1.5% of bone mass per month in the hips and spine, roughly what an older adult on Earth loses in a year. • SANS (Spaceflight Associated Neuro-ocular Syndrome): fluid pressure can flatten the back of the eyeball and change vision. • NASA Twins Study (Scott and Mark Kelly, 2015–16; Garrett-Bakelman et al., Science, 2019): Scott's telomeres lengthened in space, thousands of genes changed expression, and most changes returned to normal after landing. • Alpha Centauri is about 4.37 light-years away. At Voyager 1's speed, the trip would take roughly 70,000+ years. • Mars surface gravity is about 38% of Earth's. • Living evolution: many Tibetans carry an EPAS1 gene variant that helps them live in low-oxygen air, and the Bajau "sea nomads" have spleens about 50% larger than neighbouring land-based groups (Ilardo et al., Cell, 2018). • The "overview effect" (a term coined by Frank White, 1987) describes the shift in perspective astronauts report after seeing Earth from orbit. The future-human sections (Martians, Voyagers, the Engineered) are informed speculation, not established science. 💬 YOUR TURN If you could leave Earth forever, would you go?
