Onboard recording of a roundtrip on the Route Orange from a bus driver's point-of-view. We'll be traveling from West Baltimore MARC Station to Fox Ridge between West and East Baltimore. How significant is this line?... Quite literally THE HEAVIEST hauling route route in the network. Granted, that position could go to the CityLink Red or CityLink Gold or LocalLink 22, and I have done each of those routes, but neither is more vital nor crucial than the "Orangutan" you see here. You saw a light load on this trip. My next trip [which was recording but I decided to use this one] was a critical crush load. If you are a resident or had been following Baltimore transit for years & years, you may know or have heard of the 𝗥𝗲𝗱 𝗟𝗶𝗻𝗲 rail project. A topic of discussion for decades where I, myself, was an intern and student advocate for the project during my time in senior high school (Edmondson-Westside) when the project itself was nearing its most anticipated phase in 2012 to secure finance for the construction phase. But... insert Governor Larry Hogan and his eventual cancellation & disposal of funding for the Red Line in 2015. A critical blow to the Greater Baltimore region and we're still feeling the affects today. Prior to BaltimoreLink, there was the 𝐑𝐨𝐮𝐭𝐞 𝟐𝟑. A crosstown route that the current CityLink Orange and Blue [Orange's coupling or "twin"] mirrors for ¾ of it's original length. To say either route has sorely been in need for a rail replacement is understating how heavily dependent this service really is. Articulated buses alleviate some the issues but is far from the solution that not even 20+ buses being tossed into the fray is fixing the problem. Anyone who can sit here and say for themselves that funding for a rail line on this corridor is NOT needed haven't driven front-seat on a transit bus. Well... here you are, and if still believe that, make sure you open your doors to your precious Chevy Suburban transport 90+ patrons per trip to their destinations.
