170,000 Romans — legionaries, generals, centurions, archers and the Rome Guard, with Cleopatra at the centre — stand in a triangle on open marsh ground against 4,430,000 Uruk-hai. Twenty-six to one. The horde is split into three equal armies of nearly one and a half million, and each one is coming at a different face of the formation. That geometry is the whole battle. A line can be flanked. A ring spreads its strength evenly around a circle. A triangle does neither: it gives the enemy exactly three faces to hit, and it has been built here so that each face takes exactly one horde. Every Roman on the field is ordered to hold — nobody counter-charges, nobody moves — and the formation is layered in rings, one triangle inside another, so that whatever breaks through the outer edge meets the next edge behind it. At the very centre, in the smallest triangle of all, stands Cleopatra with a guard of thirty. Sixty thousand generals, forty thousand of the Rome Guard, three thousand centurions and nine thousand archers stand between her and the outside. So do sixty thousand ordinary legionaries, who are the ones the first Uruk-hai will actually reach. Three hordes, three sides, no gap between them. The only question is which face goes first — and how many rings are left when it does.
