Ulaanbaatar began in 1639 as a movable Buddhist monastery founded for Bogd Zanabazar, and it relocated roughly 29 times along the Tuul and Orkhon rivers before finally settling permanently at its present-day site in 1778. After the Mongolian People's Republic was formally established in 1924, the old city of Urga was renamed Ulaanbaatar, meaning Red Hero, and officially designated as the newly independent country's capital city ever since. The population has grown enormously since 1990, rising from about 535,000 residents to roughly 1.7 million people living there today, meaning nearly half of all Mongolians now live within this single sprawling capital city. Ulaanbaatar now generates about 65.5 percent of Mongolia's entire national GDP, along with the large majority of the nation's industrial output, retail trade, energy use, and overall transport activity combined together. A brand new Chinggis Khaan International Airport officially opened in July 2021, located about 50 kilometers south of the city center, replacing the old airport as the country's main international air travel gateway today.
