Why Does Becoming More Yourself Feel So Uncertain | Queer Women & Healing Sometimes, healing doesn’t make us feel more certain. It can leave us questioning what we thought we knew about ourselves, loosening our attachment to old ways of being, and wondering why the process feels messier or more confusing than we expected. This can be especially meaningful for queer women who have spent years navigating expectations, identity, relationships, and versions of themselves shaped by family, culture, or the world around them. In this conversation, we explore the overlooked middle stage of transformation. The space between understanding what has happened to us and becoming more fully who we are. We often focus on the past: What wounded us? What shaped us? What do we need to heal? Or we focus on the future: Who do we want to become? How do we want to feel? What kind of life do we want to create? But another part of the process deserves attention. The middle. The stage where the old way of being may no longer fit, but the next version of ourselves has not fully emerged. Using the metaphor of the chrysalis, we explore the possibility that transformation is not always about creating an entirely new person. Sometimes, it is about creating the conditions for parts of ourselves that have always been there to emerge more fully. We also explore the idea of an inner essence: the aliveness, intuition, desires, creativity, and knowing that may have existed beneath shame, social expectations, and the pressure to fit into a prescribed way of living. For many lesbian and queer women, this may include the parts of themselves that knew something about who they were or what they wanted long before they had the language, safety, or freedom to express it. This conversation is not about denying the impact of harm or suggesting that every difficult experience is automatically transformative. It is about making space for a more nuanced understanding of healing, identity, and change. Because sometimes the nervous system can interpret what is unfamiliar as risky, even when the change is meaningful or supportive. Moving toward a more authentic life may therefore require more than insight. It may also involve repetition, patience, self-compassion, and giving ourselves new experiences of safety. If you are in a season where you feel uncertain, between versions of yourself, or less clear than you expected to feel, this conversation may offer another way to understand what is happening. You may not be doing something wrong. You may be in the middle of becoming. In this video, we explore: Why healing can sometimes feel more confusing before it feels clear The overlooked middle stage of personal transformation The difference between becoming someone new and reconnecting with parts of yourself The idea of inner essence, intuition, and self-energy How shame and social expectations can interrupt self-trust Why change can feel unfamiliar, even when it is meaningful The relationship between transformation, the nervous system, and safety How small, repeated experiences can support a new way of being Questions to help you notice what may be changing within you A question to reflect on: What part of yourself are you beginning to recognize more clearly?
