Switzerland ran McDonald's restaurant cars on its InterCity trains for seven years, and in January 1999 a McDonald's advert played over the loudspeakers told commuters to pull the emergency cord. Two brand new coaches went into service in 1992, painted red and branded Das Familienrestaurant, with a working McDonald's kitchen frying chips somewhere between one station and the next. McDonald's paid for both of them, and neither the railway nor McDonald's own management knew what was about to go out over the speakers.
