*YOUR CHILD MAY BE BRILLIANT, BUT DO THEY HAVE THE MANNERS TO OPEN DOORS?*
Your child can come first in class, speak three languages, win competitions and have an impressive certificate. But what happens when they walk into a room full of people who know nothing about their academic achievements?
Will their behaviour make people want to know them, work with them, recommend them or give them opportunities? Or will their lack of social skills make people think twice?
*The truth is that your child's intelligence may get them noticed, but their manners can influence what happens next.*
How does your child greet an adult? Can they hold a conversation without interrupting? Do they know when to speak, when to listen and how to disagree without being rude? Can they accept correction without becoming defensive? Do they know how to say no without insulting people?
What about putting away their phones when someone is speaking to them? Giving compliments graciously? Leaving a shared space clean? Knowing how to exit a conversation politely? Giving their time, help or resources without making others feel small?
These may look like little things, but they communicate something powerful about your child's upbringing, consideration for others and ability to navigate social situations.
And here is where many parents need to pay attention: *you cannot assume that your child will automatically develop good manners simply because you are raising them in a good home.*
Manners must be taught, demonstrated, practised and reinforced. Your child needs more than instructions to say “thank you” when you are watching. They need to understand the consideration, responsibility, patience and self-awareness behind their behaviour.
In this episode of *The Visionary Parents with Enimien Oruebor**, we explore **12 everyday manners every child needs to make a good first impression and navigate the world with confidence, grace and consideration.*
We discuss:
1. The Power of a Warm, Intentional Greeting
2. Using Polite Expressions Naturally
3. Knowing When to Listen and How to Wait
4. Leaving Shared Spaces Better Than They Found Them
5. Graceful Acceptance of Both Compliments and Correction
6. Dressing Appropriately for the Occasion
7. Putting Away Their Phones
8. Showing Consideration for Others
9. Being Deliberately Kind with Words
10. Knowing How to Leave a Conversation
11. Knowing How to Give a Polite No
12. Knowing How to Give: Gifts, Time, Service, Words and Materials
Whether your child is 5, 10, 15 or approaching adulthood, these are social skills worth teaching intentionally.
*PARENTS, HERE IS YOUR CHALLENGE:* Do not just listen and agree with everything you hear. Watch your child. Observe how they behave around guests, in public places, with their siblings, with people who serve them and with people who cannot offer them anything in return.
Those moments reveal whether good manners are becoming part of their character or whether your child is simply performing when an adult is watching.
Watch to the end and ask yourself: Which of these 12 manners does my child need to practise more deliberately?
Then tell me in the comments: *Which manner do you think parents overlook the most when raising children today?*
