We’re celebrating India’s Independence Day in one of the most Punjabi places in Britain… Southall! 🇮🇳🇬🇧 In this vlog, I take my Indian Punjabi husband Harpreet to Southall for the first time and from the moment we arrive and see Punjabi written in Gurmukhi on the signs, it feels like we’ve stepped into a little piece of Punjab in London. We explore the streets of Southall, colourful Punjabi clothing and jewellery shops, Indian supermarkets filled with familiar foods and ingredients, and talk about what it feels like to find South Asian culture and community so far from home. We also have a really interesting conversation about how South Asian communities can come together when living abroad, across nationalities, histories and borders and what that sense of shared community can mean when you’re building a life somewhere else. With India celebrating Independence Day, I also ask Harpreet what independence means to him… although his answer isn’t quite as serious as I was expecting. 😂🇮🇳 Finally, we visit the Gurdwara in Southall and finish our day together with langar. 🙏 As a British-Indian couple building a life between the UK and India, this felt like such a special place to experience together.
