Every religion, every sect says one thing - to attain salvation one must do meditation. So meditation is recommended by everyone. But what or whom should we meditate on. Vedas clearly mention that the essence of meditation is Guru and to attain salvation one must get the grace of Guru. Rigveda says that hundreds of years of penance in the holy city of Banaras is no match to just a moment of thought of Guru. This is also mentioned in Ramayana.
