Volvo V50 alternator pulley change - The Volvo V50 D5 Project, Part 6

Working on the Volvo V50 D5 again. In this episode we changing the faulty alternator free wheeling pulley (sprag clutch). A faulty pulley clutch can cause many issues, worst case with this particular engine is that it can cause a catastrophic cam belt failure. Sound strange at first, but looking at the chain of events it boils down to a simple design flaw.,... if one of the drive belts goes flying, it can sling around the crank pulley and rip the cam belt off, the plastic cam cover is just too weak. Therefore it is important to keep an eye on these belts and accessories. These sprag pulleys are easily forgotten in maintenance schedules, but with modern turbo charged engines, producing large crank speed amplitudes , it's essential to keep them in good working order. Worst case is a (self) unscrewed pulley, but premature belt failures or poor idle are other common issues and if a whistling sound comes from your alternator, it's most likely time to change the pulley.
