A fingerprint scanner fails, and a family goes home without food. A pricing engine you never see sets your rent. A welfare algorithm sends you a debt you never owed. None of this is written into law. It happens inside software.
Digital technology was sold as a promise: faster, smarter, fairer. Behind that promise, a new class system is taking shape. At the top are those who own the platforms, the data and the algorithms. In the middle are workers measured by bossware and risk scores. At the bottom are people whose access to food, benefits and citizenship depends on whether a database recognizes them.
We follow record billionaire wealth of $18.3 trillion, the Justice Department's case against RealPage's rent-pricing software, the rise of workplace surveillance, Australia's Robodebt scandal, the Dutch childcare benefits scandal that brought down a government, India's Aadhaar and the starvation deaths reported in Jharkhand, and Kenyans locked out of citizenship by a refugee fingerprint database. Then we ask the real question: who gets to check the machine?
