The lesson moves across two altar names that sound simple until the battlefield and the winepress press on them. At Rephidim the fresh covenant people, quarrelsome and thirsty, are ambushed by Amalek from the rear while the exhausted stragglers limp toward Sinai. The scene is legal and cosmic at once. The seed of the serpent attacks the woman and her offspring, not as a border dispute, but as an attempt to stop the march of the kingdom before the law is given and the tabernacle is pitched. Joshua descends to lead armed men, while Moses ascends with the staff of God, Aaron and Hur beside him, and the fortunes of the valley rise and fall with the tired hands on the hill. The altar name Yahweh Nissi declares that the Lord himself is the nes [say: NESS], the lifted signal around which Israel rallies because victory is not manufactured by courage but granted through mediated intercession and divine sovereignty.
The Judges scene intensifies the darkness. Midianite swarms have bled the land white. Israel hides in caves, dens, and mountain strongholds while threshing floors are ruined and bread becomes contraband. Gideon is found in a sunken winepress, beating out wheat in secret, a portrait of fear made practical. The Angel of the Lord addresses him as a mighty man of valor before any valor appears, then consumes the offering by fire from the rock and withdraws. Gideon expects death for having seen the Angel face to face, because holy presence before atonement is not comfort but exposure. The word shalom [say: shah-LOHM] arrives as covenant verdict, not greeting card calm. Peace be to you means the restoration of relation between holy God and a sinner who expected the curse. The altar becomes Yahweh Shalom, a stake in the ground where terror should have reigned.
The resolution runs to Calvary, where the apparently defeated Nazarene becomes the true Nes lifted above the hill, drawing the nations as the bronze serpent drew dying Israel to look and live. The victory is forensic and cosmic. The certificate of debt is canceled, rulers and authorities are disarmed and put to open shame, the dividing wall of hostility is torn down, and blood makes peace by reconciling alienated humanity to holy God. Christ bears the covenant curse, fulfills its righteousness, and speaks resurrection peace into locked rooms. The believer does not climb Sinai hoping the staff will never lower, nor crouch in a winepress pretending the Angel has not seen. The believer stands under the banner that stood for rebels, and receives the shalom that once required death, because the Warrior King has exhausted the lawsuit and opened permanent Sabbath rest.
