Vijaya Dashami – Maa Durga Boron (Bidaay)
Vijaya Dashami marks the triumph of good over evil: Maa Durga's victory over Mahishasura, and, in many traditions, Lord Rama's victory over Ravana. In Bengal, the day carries both joy and heartache, as the Goddess prepares to return to her celestial home at Kailash.
Boron is the heartfelt farewell ritual performed on this day. Married women gather before the Goddess, who is adorned in red and gold, and welcome her one last time. They touch her feet with betel leaf, offer sindoor, sweets, and paan, and feed her a final taste of mishti. Then comes Sindoor Khela, where women smear vermilion on each other's faces and the Goddess's, wishing for long and happy married lives, prosperity, and the blessings of the Mother.
Drums beat, conch shells echo, and the ululation of ulu fills the air, yet eyes are moist. Devotees chant "Asche bochor abar hobe" ("She will return next year"), holding on to the promise that Maa will come again.
The day ends with the visarjan, the immersion of the idol in the river. It is a reminder that the Goddess's divine energy lives on in our hearts, giving us strength, courage, and hope until she returns.
Subho Bijoya to you and your family! 🌺
