Can wearing the wrong watch to work actually hurt your career?
Luxury watches are status signals, whether we like it or not. And research suggests those signals can affect how people perceive your competence, warmth, social status, and even whether they want to cooperate with you.
In this episode, I dig into the psychology of wearing watches at work, including studies on Rolexes in client meetings, luxury goods and perceived competence, subtle vs. conspicuous status signals, the “Red Sneakers Effect,” and even rhesus macaques that were willing to give up juice just to look at high-status monkeys.
The basic framework I came away with is simple: signal upward, be careful signaling laterally, and avoid signaling downward. And whatever you wear needs to be coded correctly for your industry.
We’ll also get into why a JLC can sometimes be a better workplace signal than a Rolex, why a Speedmaster makes sense in engineering, how a cheap watch can actually signal more status in the right circumstances, and which watches I think are safest to wear to work.
