In August 1590, John White returned to Roanoke Island looking for his daughter, his son-in-law, and his granddaughter Virginia Dare. The town was empty. 115 people were gone. Only one word was carved into a post: CROATOAN. What happened to the Lost Colony of Roanoke? In this History Point documentary, we walk through what we actually know, what archaeology has found at Hatteras Island and Site X, and why the most likely answer is that the colony split up — and disappeared into history. Was it assimilation with the Croatoan? A move inland? Drought, disease, or attack? Watch to the end and tell us which theory YOU believe.
