I have a passion for music boxes and clocks!! I am happy to share my knowledge with you or help you find a great box! I also have avenue to get them restored by some of the best restoration men. I do have friend who just got back into the music box restoration business after a bit of a hiatus and he's caught up with his work so no 2 year wait for repairs...which is quite common these days....

Here is a clean and original PVF cylinder music box with an 8" cylinder playing on 68 tooth comb in the mandolin format. There is a great tune sheet, an interesting Philly retailer oval badge mounted on the tune sheet, an original zither attachment and a nicely inlaid case with floral marquetry lid.
It's an absolute treasure of a piece to me because II love the Gilbert and Sullivan plays. It's a bit smaller than my collection is used to but now recorded I might be inclined to have it fully restored to find another music lover...maybe you. I could certainly leave it as it stand since I plays quite well, but once restored, this type of box will shine. Im deciding the best route. We'll soon see...
This PVF (Paillard Vaucher Fils) cylinder music box in a mandolin format with a 68-tooth comb is a beautiful example of late 19th-century Swiss craftsmanship. The "mandolin" style is particularly wonderful because it uses rapid, successive strikes on multiple closely tuned teeth to mimic the delicate strumming of a mandolin, which must sounds incredible playing those specific operatic melodies.
Having Gilbert and Sullivan selections—specifically from The Pirates of Penzance (1879) and H.M.S. Pinafore (1878)—firmly dates the arrangement of this box to the height of their popularity in the late 1870s or 1880s, making it a wonderful historical snapshot of Victorian musical taste.
