You wake up tired. Not the kind of tired that sleep fixes. The kind that's already there when you open your eyes.
You sit down to work. The tasks are the same. The pressure is the same. But something inside you isn't. The weekend comes. You don't work. But the exhaustion doesn't leave.
Burnout is what happens when you've been running on empty for too long. Your brain's reward system stops responding. The dopamine pathways that usually give you motivation, satisfaction, a sense of accomplishment — they're exhausted.
Think of a car that's been running nonstop without refueling. Eventually, it's not just low on gas — the engine starts breaking down. That's burnout. Not low fuel. A damaged engine.
You finish something that used to feel like a win, and you feel… nothing. Everything becomes mechanical. Small things feel enormous. And the exhaustion — not tired from work. Tired of existing itself.
Burnout doesn't come from nowhere. Chronic stress: when the pressure doesn't let up. Ever. No control: when someone else decides everything. No meaning: when the work feels pointless, and you feel pointless doing it.
Here's something important: burnout and depression are not the same thing. Burnout has a source. You know where it's coming from. With burnout, when the source changes — when you rest, when you step away — you start to feel again.
What can actually help? Boundaries. Saying no. Protecting your time. Real rest. Not scrolling. Not working at half-speed. Actual time when you are doing nothing, and that's okay. Meaning. Finding one thing that feels like it matters. And therapy.
You don't have to fix everything at once. Just one step. You are not broken.
