Big Bang theory may have the story backwards — cosmic inflation could have come first and triggered the hot Big Bang.
What if the Big Bang wasn’t the beginning of the universe, but the consequence of something even more extreme?
For decades, the Big Bang has been presented as the ultimate beginning of cosmic history. But modern cosmology tells a far more complicated story. The Big Bang theory successfully explains how the universe evolved from an extremely hot, dense early state, yet it does not necessarily explain the absolute beginning of existence itself.
In this deep dive into the Big Bang, cosmic inflation, and the origin of the universe, we trace the evidence from the discovery of the cosmic microwave background by Arno Penzias and Robert Wilson to Einstein’s equations, Hubble’s discovery of cosmic expansion, primordial nucleosynthesis, and the mysterious problems that classical Big Bang cosmology could not fully explain.
We’ll explore the horizon problem, flatness problem, and magnetic monopole problem, and then examine the revolutionary idea of cosmic inflation proposed by Alan Guth and later developed by physicists including Andrei Linde, Andreas Albrecht, and Paul Steinhardt.
Inflation may explain why the universe is so smooth, so flat, and structured on enormous scales. Even more remarkably, quantum fluctuations during inflation may have been stretched into the seeds that eventually became galaxies, stars, planets, and everything we see today.
But this raises an even bigger question: what came before inflation?
From false vacuum states and quantum tunneling to eternal inflation and the possibility of a multiverse, the deeper we travel into cosmic history, the less certain — and more fascinating — the answers become.
