Nyhavn — meaning "New Harbour" — is a 17th-century waterfront canal stretching about 450 metres from Kongens Nytorv to the Inner Harbour, lined with vividly coloured 17th and 18th-century townhouses, cosy cafés, and bars. It was commissioned by King Christian V and dug out between 1670 and 1675, originally built as a working harbour where ships unloaded cargo and fishermen brought in their catch; in its early years, it had a rough reputation tied to sailors and dockside life. The oldest surviving house on the canal, No. 9, dates all the way back to 1681. Beloved Danish author Hans Christian Andersen even called Nyhavn home for 18 years, living at three different addresses along the canal. After falling into decline in the 20th century as shipping moved elsewhere, Nyhavn was revived from the 1960s–80s and pedestrianised, transforming it into the lively, colourful harbourside spot millions of visitors flock to today, lined with beautifully preserved wooden ships on its southern side and buzzing waterfront restaurants on its sunnier northern side.
