Backpacking Albania Begins! 🇦🇱 Lost Bank Cards, Tirana Cable Car & Cocktails on the Beach

Day one of backpacking around Albania didn’t exactly go to plan… I set off super early, only to realise I forgot my credit card for the car rental deposit and had to rush back home 😅. Once I finally made it to the airport everything went smoothly for me, but not so much for my friend who got stranded when no buses were stopping at the airport parking! Eventually, we boarded our short flight from London to Tirana and picked up the car. Our first stop after checking into the hotel in Durres was the famous Dajti Ekspres cable car 🚠. It’s a 15-minute ride up the mountain to 1,613 meters with insane views over Tirana and even the Adriatic Sea on clear days. At the top there’s a rotating bar, restaurants, hiking trails and even mini golf – the perfect start to Albania! Next we headed into the city centre to explore Bunk’Art 2, a Cold War-era bunker turned museum that tells Albania’s communist history through immersive exhibits and secret police stories. A little intense but so worth the visit! By evening it was time for beach vibes 🍹. We headed to Empire Beach Bar in Durres – golden sand, comfy loungers, amazing cocktails and the perfect sunset spot.
